Osakis, a city in Douglas and Todd counties in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 1,740 at the 2010 census. Osakis was founded in 1857. The town takes its name from the lake on which the town is located. The name Osakis is thought to mean place of the Sauk and commemorates a small group of Sauk Indians who lived near the lake in the early 19th century. ^source

It was created in 1996 when it was carved out of the western portion of area code 612, which then covered central Minnesota.
